WTF is ETA? The Secret Joint-Supporting Superpower in Green-Lipped Mussels
Share
At Pawsome Naturals, we're big fans of weird and wonderful ingredients – especially ones backed by science and waggy tails. One of our all-time favourites? The legendary Green-Lipped Mussel (GLM) – a little mollusc from the clean waters of New Zealand that packs a serious punch in the pet health world.
Why? Because it's one of the only natural sources of a rare, joint-loving omega-3 fatty acid called...
ETA – Eicosatetraenoic Acid
(Say it with us: eye-co-sa-tetra-ee-no-ic)
You've probably heard of EPA and DHA (the well-known omega-3s found in fish oils). But ETA is their lesser-known cousin with some impressive anti-inflammatory powers – especially when it comes to joint pain, stiffness, and mobility.
The science bit (we'll keep it fun)
ETA blocks an inflammatory enzyme called COX (cyclooxygenase) — the same one targeted by anti-inflammatory medications, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
But unlike medications, ETA is natural, gentle on the gut, and comes with zero side-eye from your vet (unless they're jealous they didn't think of it first).
In fact, a study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that green-lipped mussel extract significantly reduced joint pain and improved mobility in arthritic dogs, with far fewer side effects than conventional medications. (Reference: J Nutr. 2007 Jul;137(7):1960S–1963S)
Which pets might benefit from it?
Green-lipped mussel can be helpful for:
- Older pets showing signs of stiffness
- Active or large-breed dogs are prone to joint strain
- Rescue pets with past injuries or arthritis
- Cats who no longer leap and twist like tiny parkour champions
It's also naturally rich in glucosamine, chondroitin, zinc, and marine-based antioxidants, making it a valuable long-term support for joint and overall wellbeing.
Is Green-Lipped Mussel expensive?
It can be. But don't worry – here are some savvy, budget-friendly ways to include it:
Freeze-dried GLM powder
Look for human-grade or pet-grade powders from Aussie suppliers. These often cost less per gram than capsules or chews and can be mixed straight into meals. Choose a single-ingredient, additive-free product.
Frozen raw green-lipped mussels
Some Asian grocers and seafood suppliers stock these. Just ensure they're:
- From New Zealand (clean and low in contaminants)
- Not flavoured or marinated
- Given in moderation to avoid upset tummies
One small mussel, two to three times per week, is enough for most dogs under 20 kg. You can chop or blend them into meals. For tiny dogs or cats, start with half.
Signs your pet might be experiencing joint pain
Many pets are adept at hiding their pain. Watch for signs like:
- Stiffness or limping, particularly after rest or in colder weather
- Reluctance to jump, climb stairs, or run
- Slower walks or refusal to walk
- Lying down or sitting differently than usual
- Sensitivity or irritability when touched, especially near the hips or legs
- Licking or chewing at joints (elbows, knees, hips)
- Muscle loss around joints over time
If these symptoms occur regularly, a check-in with your vet and some proactive joint support could be a great step forward.
Are there any side effects?
GLM is generally safe and well-tolerated for both dogs and cats. That said, keep an eye out for:
- Mild soft stools if introduced too quickly
- Rare allergic reactions, particularly in pets with shellfish sensitivities
- Fussy cats who may dislike the taste.
Avoid giving GLM to pets with known shellfish allergies, those on blood thinners, or pets with chronic liver issues unless your vet gives the all-clear.
PN tip: start slow and mix smart
When introducing green-lipped mussels, start with half the suggested amount for a few days and monitor your pet's response.
GLM pairs beautifully with other joint-supporting heroes, such as turmeric, MSM, marine collagen, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Final thought: ETA is your joint's new best mate
At Pawsome Naturals, we believe that real food can be real medicine, and green-lipped mussels are a perfect example. Whether you're using freeze-dried powder or the real thing from the freezer aisle, GLM is a natural, science-backed, and pawsome way to support your pet's comfort, mobility, and longevity.
